Planters filled with spring water bubbling up from Ginza are now here! Grow plants by feeding them with human voices and music

Ginza Sony Park welcomes a collaboration with Yuri Nomura, the chef who leads the eatrip culinary creativity team and manages eatrip Restaurant in Harajuku, Tokyo. This program makes it possible to grow plants in the middle of the city by nourishing them with spring water that bubbles up in Ginza, and with the voices of visitors, the sounds of people in town, and the music they play.

Grow plants in planters with the water that gushes under Ginza Sony Park, while serenading them with the voices of park visitors and the sounds of live music. In addition to live performances by musicians, there will also be round table discussions, workshops, and the eatrip Market selling different tasty food items each week chosen by eatrip from locations all over Japan.

We invite everyone to come join this program, to grow plants with underground Ginza water and the sounds of voices and music.

Duration: 2019.4.20 - 5.24

Exhibit Overview

PARK B3/ Basement 3

These planters with water from the underground of Ginza serenade the growing flowers and plants with the voices and sounds of visitors in the form of vibrating waves. Visitors can also see installations in which the water reacts to sound.

PARK B2/ Basement 2

Pianos will be regularly available for visitors to play at their leisure. The sounds that are played resonate simultaneously with the planters on Basement 3F, causing reactions on the surface of the water. Visitors can also enjoy the flower cycle installation in waterways surrounding the pianos. Presented by The Little Shop of Flowers, this installation gradually changes form throughout the duration of the event.

Visitors to the venue are welcomed by an installation made of cloth by color dye artist Yuko Kitta. Its lusciously decorative colors made with dyes derived from vegetables bestow the entire venue with a feeling of the cycle between water and plants.

Profile of Yuri Nomura

Leader and Chef of eatrip culinary creativity team.

The hospitality academy that her mother ran for several years led her to pursue the path of cooking. Based on the cuisine and food preparations that express the four seasons of Japan, as well as the spirit of hospitality, she ties together people, places, and things from a wide variety of angles, and develops them further. Her first production as a director was the food documentary film "eatrip," which was released in 2009 and is currently available on DVD. She has also written books including "eatrip gift," "Shunkashuto Oishii Techou" (Notebook of Flavor for the Four Seasons), and "Tokyo eatrip." Her newest book "Tasty of Life" is planned for release in May.

Yuri Nomura

I often think,

"What exactly is 'food' these days?"

As someone who lives in Tokyo and makes a living as a cook, this feels like a question that I normally want to ask more and more people the longer I do this type of work.

I have connected these ideas in the film "eatrip" which I made 10 years ago, and the event "Shoku no Kodo (the Pulse of Food) - inner eatrip" which I produced two years ago.

Earlier I heard that there is water flowing underneath Ginza, and that it still flows under Ginza Sony Park.

In this neighborhood of consumption, there are also resources!

Among earth, water, and air which form the foundation we need to be able to grow food, this neighborhood of Ginza has possessed water.

From there, I came up with the idea for "a foundation for creating food" centered around "water" in "eatrip City Creatures."

Just like a miniature version of the Tsukiji Fish Market, we are bringing together all kinds of foods produced and grown throughout Japan, and at the same time we are growing food in the very same place.

The food grown at Ginza Sony Park grows with nourishment not only from the underground water of Ginza, but also from the voices of people and sounds of the neighborhood.

Visitors are the "consumers," while anyone and everyone can also be a producer.

Food is a very important thing that relates to all humans.

Through the various events, exhibits, and spaces presented here over the course of about one month, I hope to create an environment where people can feel their own energy and the energy of the water in Ginza, and also think about what food will actually be in the future.

Yuri Nomura

eatrip

Food is universal. It goes into the body, and it creates the body and mind. Even when people cannot communicate with language, it can sometimes be even more persuasive than language, and have profound impact on people's memories and the way they live as it stimulates the five senses. Connecting and communicating, while creating life and culture. This is the ongoing voyage that is "eatrip".
