MANGA in New York

Presented by Ginza Sony Park Project

Fri. OCT 27 - Sun. NOV 5, 2023

Chelsea, New York City

Explanatory note

Piano-based background music begins playing. Scenes of the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City show in quick succession, with shots of passing cars, people walking around town, and buildings against a white sky. Among them are shots of the entrances and signs of Pace, Gagosian Gallery, and Studio 525.

The screen cuts to a shot of the exterior of Studio 525, the venue for MANGA in New York. A rectangular sign hangs on the dark green exterior wall by the entrance. On it is text reading Fri. OCT 27 - Sun. NOV 5, 2023 MANGA in New York Presented by Ginza Sony Park Project and illustrations from six artists.

Mellow drums begin playing with the music, gradually rising in excitement. A long line of attendees stands along the sidewalk in front of Studio 525, and numerous cars are parked on the shoulder of the road.

The MANGA in New York sign attracts the gaze of passersby and the attendees in line. A staff member standing to the side of the entrance guides people to enter. People continue to line up.

The screen cuts to the interior of the venue. Immediately inside is a space with a white wall divided into six segments by black lines, resembling the panel layout of a manga. Each panel has screentones composed of gradations or concentrated lines. The names of the six artists are written in black, while the names of their art pieces are written in orange and blue and protrude slightly from the panels.

Large text reading MANGA in New York presented by Ginza Park Project is arranged in the center across the panels. The background music momentarily gets quieter.

The music resumes with growing tension. The screen cuts to the inside of the venue, where crowds of people are viewing the exhibited works. The exhibition is laid out like the panel of a manga, and each artist has drawn their works within the panels. The inside of the venue is bustling with crowds of people.

This is Hikaru Ichijo's exhibition. Lines drawn across the white wall create large manga panels, with colorful illustrations inside each panel. One wall is adorned with small frames spaced evenly apart, with colorful illustrations inside each.

The screen cuts to Katsuya Terada's exhibition. Lines on the white wall create large manga panels. Inside are unique illustrations of a dinosaur that resembles a tyrannosaurus, a samurai and ninja, a hooded old man with a white beard holding a trident, a flying robot, a girl riding a giant tiger, and a cat.

The screen cuts to Takakurakazuki's exhibition. Colorful characters resembling those from a retro video game are drawn on the wall. They seem to almost jump out of their panels. Two box-shaped white monitor screens are arranged on a white table in the exhibition space, showing illustrations by Takakurakazuki. A simple controller composed of a single lever is played in front of the monitor.

The screen cuts to the exhibition by millennium parade. In a dark room, a man views a large painting of a face, the right half of which appears to be stretching. Tiled patterns are projected onto the floor, and images of ripples spreading on the surface of the water are projected in response to visitors' footsteps.

The screen cuts to the exhibition by Masanobu Hiraoka. In a dark room, black and white manga illustrations are exhibited on a white board. Lines on the back wall create large manga panels, with black and white manga illustrations inside. One particularly impressive panel is animated, appearing to fly towards planets in space.

The screen cuts to an exhibition by Miku Masuda. Lines drawn across the white wall create large manga panels, with black and white illustrations inside each panel. Monitors are embedded at equal intervals on a table within the exhibition space, showing animations of moving text and sound effects from manga.

The screen cuts to fast-forwarded footage of various scenes inside of the venue. Every space in the exhibition is bustling with crowds of attendees.

The screen cuts to an exterior shot of the venue. A pedestrian walkway stretches alongside the buildings in Chelsea. The well-manicured walkway is lush with greenery. The screen shows people walking, sunlight glistening through the trees, and various shots of the city.

The screen once again cuts to the inside of the venue. There are still many people viewing the exhibition.

Footage of each exhibition and the artist is displayed in a vertical split screen format.

The screen quickly cuts to various scenes, including a person receiving a beverage from the "MANGA-CAN" vending machine and people viewing art books from the event.

The screen cuts to a scene of the Picture Piecing Animation Worksho

p by Masanobu Hiraoka. Six children sit at a long table, each drawing on a tablet device with a pen. One child has a memo in front of them reading "park" and "wind." They draw numerous blue lines on the tablet. Manipulating the tablet causes the lines to animate, resembling the wind. A supervising adult, Masanobu Hiraoka, and the children all laugh.

The screen cuts to a live drawing event by Katsuya Terada. He uses a black magic marker to draw onto a large white board set up on a wall in the exhibition space. Attendees surround Mr. Terada to watch him as he draws. Gradually, he completes illustrations of dragons and humans. Upon completion, Mr. Terada lightly waves to the audience as they applaud and cheer. Audience members line up to receive an autograph from Mr. Terada as he signs items one by one.

The screen cuts to large, sticky note size stickers that resemble the speech bubbles from manga. The stickers contain visitors' illustrations and text drawn and written in colored markers. Various languages are visible, including English, Chinese, and Japanese. The stickers are pasted on a wall with lines that resemble the panels of a manga. The stickers gradually fill up the space on the wall.

Accompanied by the background music, the screen quickly cuts between shots of people taking photos of walls, children drawing illustrations while lying in front of the wall, crowds of people viewing and experiencing the artists' works, and long lines of people outside the venue.

The screen cuts to an interior shot of the venue, once again showing the wall immediately inside with the artist names and MANGA in New York written on the manga panels.

The background music concludes and the screen cuts to an exterior shot of a less crowded Studio 525. A sign reading MANGA in New York hangs from the exterior wall next to the entrance. In front walk six people of various ages.
