Sony Park Exhibition ⑤SEMICONDUCTORS with YOASOBI

Step into the world of correspondence beyond time and space of YOASOBI's new song "Taisho Roman"

Ginza Sony Park has heralded the theme "Semiconductors create new realities," believing Sony's semiconductors (sensors), which could also be called electronic eyes, evolve the imaginations and fantasies of various people into something real. As per YOASOBI's concept of turning short stories into music, short stories from diverse genres also pass through the sensors of group members Ayase and ikura to become music encapsulating the character of the age and move the spirits of many. Ginza Sony Park thought the chemical reaction between narrative and music that happens in that process is very much like science fiction.

This event intermingles the two seemingly distant yet close ideas of semiconductors and YOASOBI and creates the fresh experience of stepping into the world of the group's new song "Taisho Roman," which will have its streaming release on September 15, 2021 (Wed). The original story for this song unfolds from the era-crossing correspondence between the main character Tokito, who lives in the present day, and Chiyoko, who lives 100 years earlier in the Taisho era, and is a piece that depicts a heartrending yet beautiful tale of love. Visitors will experience the narrative of the original story and the worldview of the song in the "Taisho Roman-NOVEL INTO MUSIC" main part of this exhibition through features such as an original animation on the motif of the correspondence between the two characters. Visitors can also enjoy "YOASOBI's Miniature Garden of Night Pleasures," where the book of the short story materializes in a small box and three-dimensional images can be seen without the use of special glasses.

Ginza Sony Park hopes visitors will enjoy a bit of a mysterious experience of the sorrowful, lovely world of the original story along with the full version of the song "Taisho Roman" before its streaming release.

Semiconductors are like science fiction.

"The future is already here - it's just not very evenly distributed."

This is a quote by the science fiction author, William Gibson.

The autonomous entertainment robot, aibo, and the prototype of a vehicle offering a new form of mobility, VISION-S Prototype, evolved through the use of Sony's semiconductors.

Just like the world of science fiction envisaged by Gibson, Sony's semiconductors have evolved the future that is already here, and the imagination of many people, turning them into reality.

New technologies that turn fantasy into reality will create new communities.

What new experiences can technologies create?

Come and enjoy the SF experience envisaged by Ginza Sony Park.

Comments from YOASOBI

There is always a narrative at the center of our, YOASOBI's, music. Depth is created from the connections between narrative and music. I hope visitors will enjoy that three-dimensional worldview from a new angle through this exhibition. -Ayase

The shape of the story for "Taisho Roman" came together from a love surpassing space and time. When I did my vocals, I sang with my heart warmed by the main character's affection for the significant other he cannot meet. With that affection, I would love for this work to be unforgettable for everyone who experiences YOASOBI through this exhibition. -ikura

Exhibition outline

Ginza Sony Park thought the chemical reaction between narrative and music, in which short stories from diverse genres pass through the sensors of YOASOBI group members Ayase and ikura to become music summarizing the character of the age and move the spirits of many, is similar to how Sony's semiconductors continue to evolve the imaginations and fantasies of various people into something real. Both are very much like science fiction.

In this Sony Park Exhibition SEMICONDUCTORS with YOASOBI, visitors will enjoy a bit of a mysterious experience, like stepping into the world of YOASOBI's new song "Taisho Roman," which will start streaming on September 15, 2021 (Wed), before the song's release.

The new song "Taisho Roman" was created based on the short story "Taisho Romance" (by NATSUMI), which won first prize out of 2,086 contributions in the "YOASOBI Contest vol. 2" competition for original works held last year, in July 2020. This short story unfolds from the era-crossing correspondence between the main character Tokito, who lives in the present day, and Chiyoko, who lives 100 years earlier in the Taisho era, and is a piece that depicts a heartrending yet beautiful tale of love.

In addition to the song "Taisho Roman," a main attraction of "Taisho Roman-NOVEL INTO MUSIC," where visitors experience the world of the original work, will be an interactive video experience in which shadowplay animations arise when they illuminate the wall surfaces with special electric lamps set up in the venue. The animations will be an interactive video experience in which visitors peer into the exchange of correspondence between Tokito and Chiyoko, based on the plot of the original short story. Enjoy the worldview of the two characters' correspondence and the song through a video experience that is slightly different from the music video.

Guests can also take home original posters printed with the short story.

The reproduced short story appears in space in 3D computer graphics using Sony's high-resolution Spatial Reality Display. A small world like a miniature garden stretches across the display. Eye tracking follows the viewer's gaze to turn the pages of the story, and letters arise for viewers to enjoy a spatial image experience as if the objects were really there.

YOASOBI Profile

Made up of composer Ayase and vocalist ikura, YOASOBI is a unit that turns short stories into music. Their first song "Racing into the Night (Yoru ni Kakeru)," released in November 2019, surpassed 400 million streaming views in December 2020 and snagged first place on Billboard Japan's Hot 100 overall song chart for 2020. The video for their second song "Tracing that Dream (Ano Yume wo Nazotte)" became the basis for an original comic, and for their third song "Halzion" they collaborated with a beverage and film production. They released their fourth song "Probably (Tabun)" on July 20 and "Gunjo," a song for a commercial for Bourbon Alfort Mini Chocolate, on September 1. They released the song "Haruka," based on a novel by Osamu Suzuki, in December. On January 6, 2021, they released their long-awaited first CD album THE BOOK. The lavish binder attached to the album gained much attention, and they broke into Oricon's daily rankings at second on the chart. They also achieved the remarkable feat of streaming their songs to have all of them rank simultaneously within the top 15 on the Apple Music streaming charts. Their successively released opening theme "Kaibutsu" and ending theme "Yasashii Suisei" from the television anime BEASTARS reached first on various charts. In February, they held their first solo concert KEEP OUT THEATER at the construction site of the former Shinjuku Milano , demonstrating the excitement of a record 40,000 viewers. They have also expanded their offerings beyond music to novelizations and film adaptations of their original short stories.
